Jade Zickefoose, a queer, nonbinary artist, excels in music composition, choreography, and dance. Their creations explore the intersection of queer life and the concept of time while challenging oppressive systems through art for social change. With a passion for evoking emotions through grounded movement, embracing momentum, and fostering meaningful connections, Jade showcases their dedication to multidimensional expression and their unique perspective as an emerging artist. Holding a BFA in Dance and a Minor in Music Composition from Missouri State University, Jade's body of work reflects their commitment to artistic exploration. Jade is also an award-winning a cappella arranger, known for their talent in crafting mesmerizing mashups of contemporary songs that captivate audiences.
Artist Statement
As a Gen Z artist who identifies as trans and queer, my creative work is deeply influenced by gender expression, sexuality, social issues, and the power of imagination. Throughout history, gender norms have dictated societal roles, and my goal is to dismantle these stereotypes through my art. I am committed to incorporating queer themes into my work to help normalize our existence. Growing up in a generation where pressing social issues cannot be ignored, I have been given a platform to express my concerns and encourage others to fight for meaningful change.
The idea of "home" has evolved for me over time. When I was younger, it simply meant the place where I lived, but as I've gotten older, it has come to represent a place where I feel safe and comfortable. I didn't consider myself a smart student in school, as I struggled with reading and writing. This made it difficult for me to find my place. However, when I joined choir, band, and theatre, everything changed. These creative outlets allowed me to communicate in different ways, and dance became my favorite means of expression. Through dance, I found a sense of belonging and felt at home.
Through my involvement in the a cappella community, I have discovered the transformative power of music and developed essential leadership skills. This vibrant community has provided me with a platform to learn and grow as a music arranger. Coupled with my studies in music composition, this experience has deepened my understanding of arranging music for a cappella ensembles. Music has become essential to my life, and I can't imagine a world without its powerful impact and the immense happiness it brings me.
Looking forward, I am dedicated to pushing the boundaries of creativity, championing inclusivity, and harnessing the profound influence of artistic expression to reshape our world. As a Gen Z artist, I am guided by the belief that art holds the transformative potential to transcend barriers, challenge societal norms, and catalyze positive change.
